Michael Thomas is a screenwriter, playwright, actor, director and musical director, as well as the Artistic Director of the Renaissance Theatre. Originally from New London, he attended Wright State University before heading off to Chicago where he musical directed the national tours of The Secret Garden and Once On This Island, co-wrote the long-running Hamlet: The Musical with Jeff Richmond, performed with The Second City, and also received three coveted Joseph Jefferson Awards for his theatre work, including With or Without Wings, which was named "Best New Play of 2001". Here at the Renaissance, he has created and directed the critically acclaimed Sentimental Journey: Voices of World War II, which celebrated its world premiere on the Ren stage in 2009. He also wrote the musical revue The Unforgettable Marvelenes, Remember Me Always: High School Yearbook 1977, Down at the End of Lonely Street, Twilight Gardens, Doo-Woppin' Around the Christmas Tree, Christmas Cocktails: It's a Swingin' Holiday, 2008's Holiday Radio Cavalcade for the Mansfield Symphony, the adaptation of Count: The Legend of Dracula and The Creole Cinderella for Neos Dance Theatre and Hercules: Making the World Safe for Mankind, Aesop and Tall Tales and Other Big Fat Lies for RYOT. He has directed our productions of Les Misérables, Joseph, Always Patsy Cline, Nuncrackers, Seussical, A Chorus Line, Forever Plaid, Twilight Gardens, They're Playing Our Song, Chicago, Ragtime, Lonely Street, Legally Blonde: The Musical and Doo-Woppin' Around the Christmas Tree, The Great American Trailer Park Musical, Christmas Cocktails, Avenue Q,Young Frankenstein, Peter Pan, The Great American Trailer Park Christmas Musical, Xanadu and Mary Poppins, and appeared as Amos Hart in Chicago, Max Bialystack in The Producers, and created the Off-Broadway Series, The Renaissance Originals program as well as the Young Playwright's Unit.
